It’s Fall! And like every Fall, the animals were busy getting ready for winter.
All the squirrels were running around the park with their cheeks full of acorns.
All... but one!
“What are you doing, Riki?” asked Kira. “We have to get ready for winter!”
“In a moment,” said Riki. “This year, I’m making a map of the park BEFORE I hide my acorns. See? This is the park and this is a map of the park. With this map, come Spring, I will remember exactly where my acorns are hidden.”
“That’s a great idea! May I help?”“Yes! Two is always better than one!”
Kira climbed the tree. From there, she could see the entire park.“On my map, I already have the tree, the big rock and the swings. Am I missing anything?” asked Riki.
“Yes! To the right of the swings there is a stump. It’s the perfect place to hide acorns!”“Perfect!” said Riki. “Is the stump close to or far from the swings?”“It’s very close! Only one square to the right.”Riki drew a symbol of a stump on the map. “Excellent!” said Riki. “There are so many great places to hide acorns!”
“How many trees are on the map?” Kira asked.“Only the one you are on. Why?”“Because there is another.”“Really? Let me see!”Riki climbed the tree.
“You’re right!” said Riki. “There’s a second tree in the square in front of the stump. I’ll add it to the map.”
“Now, all we need to do is bury the acorns and mark our hiding spots on the map.”
Kira followed Riki. Each time he hid some acorns, she marked it on the map.
“Some acorns in the tree” said Riki. “Got it!” said Kira. “We stay here at A4!” “Some acorns next to the big rock." “One, two, three squares down! At A1!" “Some acorns in the other tree!" “Two squares to the right and one square up. We are at C2!”
“Some acorns in the stump!" "One square up and hop on the stump. We’re at C3!" “And the rest of the acorns under the swings!” said Riki. “One square to the left and we’re at B3!”Riki and Kira were happy.
“Hooray!” said Kira. “All the acorns are hidden. We are ready for winter!”
Finally, it was Spring! And like every Spring, the animals were very busy. All the squirrels were looking in vain for their hidden acorns. All... but two!“... and C2!”
“Wow!” said Riki. “Our map worked! We’ve found all our hidden acorns!”
